About the Book
Nine-year-old Harris is still dealing with the death of his parents from an accident three years ago. To make matters worse, Grampa’s cross all the time; his older sister Tessa thinks only about a boy at school; and Pinky—well, Pinky does what three-year-olds do. An upcoming assignment for the Grade 5 Science Fair seems like an impossible task with terrible consequences if Harris doesn’t finish. But he just can’t seem to concentrate on anything but forgetting. When a mysterious crow flies into his life, Harris learns a few things about memory and how it works. But will his discoveries help him rise above the past and carry on? Magic realism for ages 8 – 12.
About the Author
Beverley Brenna has published over a dozen books for young people including titles that have been shortlisted for a Governor General's Award and counted on CBC's 100 Young Adult Books That Make You Proud To Be A Canadian. Because of that Crow fictionalizes some of Bev's experiences living in rural Saskatchewan--they had a lovely scaredy-cat dog; the kids went to a country school via school bus; and they raised orphan lambs. One of the real-life stories appearing in this book involves a crow that was discovered on another rural playground, and whose adopted family mirrored its original family in uncanny ways. Much of Bev's writing includes topics that support readers in vicarious learning that inspires resilience and hope.
