The artistic universe of Regina artist Victor Cicansky is firmly rooted in his garden. For over fifty years, ideas for sculptures in ceramics and bronze have grown out of his intimate relationship with the plants and trees of his backyard. From the iconoclastic experimentation of his student days in California, to the recognition of his prairie immigrant roots, to his celebration of shovel to plate gardening — Cicansky has unearthed a politics of place using humour, play, and provocation. This richly illustrated publication is co-edited by Timothy Long and Julia Keueger and features essays and interviews by Alison Calder, SC Dam, Trevor Herriot, Garth Johnson, and Susan Surette. It celebrates a "garden universe," as Herriot calls it, and marks Cicansky's lasting contributions to Canadian art and craft history.
About the Author
Julia Krueger is a PhD candidate in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario and an independent craft researcher, writer and curator. She was associate curator for the retrospective exhibitions "Tactile Desires: The Work of Jack Sures" and "Hansen-Ross Pottery: Pioneering Fine Craft on the Canadian Prairies". Her writing has been published in journals, books, and exhibition catalogues, including: "Crafting New Traditions: Canadian Innovators and Influences", "Regina Clay: Worlds in the Making", and "Mireille Perron — The Anatomy of a Glass Menagerie: Altaglass". Timothy Long is Head Curator at the MacKenzie Art Gallery where he has worked for the last thirty years. He has curated or co-curated the nationally touring retrospectives "David Thauberger: Road Trips & Other Diversions", "Wilf Perreault: In the Alley", and "Tactile Desires: The Work of Jack Sures", as well as the historical survey "Regina Clay: Worlds in the Making". His interest in interdisciplinary dialogues involving art, sound, ceramics, film, and contemporary dance has resulted in a number of innovative projects, including "Soundtracks", "Mobile Structures", "Atom Egoyan: Steenbeckett", and "Re: Celebrating the Body".
